During a long English summer in the early 1980s, two schoolboys from differing backgrounds set out to make a film inspired by <a href=">First Blood (1982).
SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early '80s, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up. We see the story through the eyes of Will, the eldest son of a fatherless Plymouth Brethren family. The Brethren regard themselves as God's 'chosen ones' and their strict moral code means that Will has never been allowed to mix with the other 'worldlies,' listen to music or watch TV, until he finds himself caught up in the extraordinary world of Lee Carter, the school terror and maker of bizarre home movies. Carter exposes Will to a pirate copy of Rambo: First Blood and from that moment Will's mind is blown wide open and he's easily convinced to be the stuntman in Lee Carters' diabolical home movie. Will's imaginative little brain is not only given chance to flourish in the world of film making, but is also very handy when it comes to dreaming up elaborate schemes to keep his partnership with Lee Carter a secret from the Brethren community. Will and Carter's complete disregard for consequences and innocent ambition means that the process of making their film is a glorious roller-coaster that eventually leads to true friendship. They start to make a name for themselves at school as movie makers but when popularity descends on them in the form of the Pied Piper-esque French exchange student, Didier Revol, their unique friendship and their precious film are pushed, quite literally, to breaking point.
Every so often you have to watch a film like this just to remind yourself how good it was to be young. This is a truly lovely film that has some truly laugh out loud moments and some heart wrenching moments also. The 2 main actors are great and it is their relationship that makes this story the feel good film that it is. It reminded me slightly of "Stand By Me" and was one of those films that left you feeling good at the end of it and a smile creeping onto your mouth. This is a story of a religious boy who meets with the local rebel and form a firm friendship. Together they set out to make a film to be entered into a competition run by a TV station and that film is based on "First Blood". Although the version they are making is a reflection of one boys search for his dead father and a way of reuniting them together. It is touching that once the young boy starts to make the film he becomes a different character. Where he starts off as a shy, scared boy he becomes extrovert and energetic. The rebel is an obvious loner who just needs someone to be friends with him as his older brother doesn't know he exists and treats him like a servant rather than a brother. Throughout the adventure they share they go through good and bad times and some of the things they do for the film will make you laugh out loud. Some of the action scenes for the film are exaggerated for comic effect and to represent the boys imagination but this makes it the more adorable when you watch it. All in all this is a wonderful film that can't fail to touch the stoniest of hearts.
"Son of Rambow" is about that special time in a boy's life when movies takes him out of the mundane. Everybody's got a story, whether playing Rambo with toy guns and invisible bullet proof vests (that somehow covered the entire body) or putting together little short films with action figures. The story of young Will Proudfoot (Bill Milner) takes place in 1980's Britain, where he is raised within an isolated religious sect known as The Brethren. Will is not allowed to talk with outsiders and music, movies, and television are all outlawed. He does go to a normal school however, which is where he meets Lee Carter (Will Poulter), the school bully and maker of home videos. When Lee shows Will a pirated copy of "Rambo: First Blood" his mind is blown and he sets out to make a grand action epic with Lee, all while trying to keep what he's doing a secret from The Brethren. Will proves quite the film-maker and soon a real friendship forms between him and Lee. Word of the film spreads, leading to school popularity, but when French exchange student Didier Revol (Jules Sitruk) starts hanging out with them, their friendship and the film is tested.

The family-friendly genre has become a stale one. It's rare that it holds surprises and the comedy is usually childish and the jokes come few and far between. What I'm trying to say is, even though I admire writer-director Garth Jennings (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) trying to make a movie about child-hood imagination, it's just not that entertaining. There is some slap-stick stunt-work that should put a smile on children's faces, but there isn't nearly enough of it to keep them laughing and interested. And as far as I can tell, the movie contains even less of an appeal for anyone who's seen this kind of movie before. There are a few funny 1980's fashion styles and hairdos, but that does not a hilarious comedy make.

That being said the cast is actually kind of charming and keeps things from getting too boring. Bill Milner is a cute little kid and he conveys the character's innocence and enthusiasm well and Will Poulter is pretty funny as the smart-ass Lee Carter. And Jules Sitruk probably gets the best character, playing an 80's French punk-rocker-type who has the entire school eating out of his hand. Girls forming a line in order to make-out with him is probably the funniest thing in the movie.

"Son of Rambow" is not terrible, but it falls short of capturing the nostalgic good-feelings that child-hood fantasy creates. Even though the cast is all game, it's not that clever and it's not that funny. This was a pretty big disappointment for me, especially considering the movie has gotten some really good advance word of mouth.
A quirky charmer.
Son of Rambow is based on a screenplay that was written by director Garth Jennings. It was inspired by Jennings' own experiences as a child in the 1980s, when video equipment first became available to the public. No. Son of Rambow isn't about Rambo; rather, it's about young boys who are inspired to make their own video after having seen First Blood (1982) (1982). Apparently, the spelling had to be changed because of problems with copyright infringement. It is also a way of communicating to moviegoers that the film is not part of the Rambo series, which it would have seemed at first glance if spelled correctly. The "mistake" is acknowledged in a brief dialogue between the film's two protagonists at the end of the credits. In England education is compulsory until the age of 16, but many students stay on until they are 18. The school years when a student is 16 (or 17) and 17 (or 18) are respectively called the lower and upper sixth form (or year 12 and 13). Many schools have separate buildings for these years, and nearly all have common rooms for sixth-formers. The common room is an area where pupils can spend time when they don't have classes. Younger years will generally not have any free periods and so don't need such a facility; it therefore emphasizes the boys' new-found popularity as they normally wouldn't have been allowed in. Several people have noted that Son of Rambow reminds them of Stephen King's Stand by Me (1986) (1986) in the way that it provides a nostalgic look at the camaraderie, the coming of age, the bittersweet vulnerability, and the fantastic humor of childhood. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988) (1988) has similar themes. If you are looking for a similar British style then try Millions (2004) (2004). The similar theme of children working on a project together but experiencing a schism is presented in Once in a Blue Moon (1995) (1995). The first song is "Over and Done With" by The Proclaimers; the second song is "Rebel Rebel" by David Bowie.
